Áras Inis Gluaire is Ireland’s only bilingual arts centre, situated in Belmullet town. It is named after Inis Gluaire (Inishglora) off the coast of Erris. Legend says that the Children of Lir spent their final 300 years there and are buried on the island.
Áras Inis Gluaire comprises of a 170-seat auditorium, an exhibition space, a recording studio, a local radio facility (Iorras FM), a reception space and a café area. Local, regional and national theatre groups regularly perform here, and many well-known musicians have held concerts here, including Sharon Shannon, Mick Flannery, Sean Keane, Eleanor McEvoy and the David Munnelly Band.
There are monthly exhibitions in Áras Inis Gluaire and also a permanent exhibition which features the original illustrations of the famous Edward Ardizzone, taken from a book written about the people & places of Erris (‘The Godstone and the Blackymor’ by T.H. White).
Regular workshops and children’s activities are held here, e.g. Féile na bPáistí and Cineclub na nÓg. Contact the centre to find out what’s happening now & what’s upcoming.
Áras Inis Gluaire is a place that is full of stories – not to be missed!
